Peter Jay Damby, 76, of Rockford, passed peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, April 22. He was born May 14, 1944, in Chicago, IL, moved to Rockford as a young boy, and graduated West High in 1962. He worked for the Rockford Public Schools as a teacher and administrator for more than 50 years and was a passionate advocate for education and students. Peter was a big personality with an even bigger heart. He was involved in the Sara Ingrassia Jackie Confer Dictionary Fund, which for 20 years gave every third grader in the Rockford Public Schools their own dictionary. He was an avid supporter of Severson Dells Nature Center and served on its board for many years. He loved riding his Harley; spending time at the lake; vacationing in Mexico; traveling across the U.S. and internationally; skiing (and teaching others to ski); and, most of all, spending time with his family. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Susan and parents Peter and Gladys. Survived by Melissa, Robert, Erica, and Craig Wong; Jon, Katie, Sawyer Jay, and Ansley Damby; David Damby and Morgan Keys; Kathryn Damby and Joshua Anderson; sister Linda Finnegan; brother Scott (Connie) Damby; many nieces and nephews; his girlfriend, Rita; and countless friends. There will be a private family service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Severson Dells Nature Center, 8786 Montague Rd., Rockford, IL 61102 or https://www.seversondells.com/donate to support educational outreach programs for children in Rockford schools.
