Rosemary Murphy Highland, 97, of Rockford, IL, formerly of Durand, IL, passed away peacefully at home on December 1, 2021. Rosemary was born on July 1, 1924 in Rockford, IL at OSF St. Anthony Hospital, the daughter of Maurice and Clare Murphy.
Rosemary grew up in Durand, IL on the family farm. She graduated from Durand Schools, and attended Rosary College in River Forest, IL (now Dominican University) and graduated in 1946 with a degree in Home Economics. She married Bernard Highland on November 19, 1949 in Durand where they farmed for many years. Rosemary taught Home Economics at Dakota High School and then taught first grade at Durand Elementary School. She was a member of St. Edward Parish in Rockford. Rosemary also served on the Citizen’s Survey Committee in the 1960s for the formation of Rock Valley College.
She is survived by her children, daughters Rita Highland (Katy Connell), Mary Clare (Angelo) Ingoglia, Sheila Highland, and son John Highland, along with many relatives and friends. Predeceased by her parents, husband Bernard, brother Fr. James Murphy.
A visitation will be held at St. Edward Catholic Church social hall, 3004 Eleventh Street, Rockford, IL on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral mass at 12:00 noon in the church with Pastor Fr. Johnson Lopez officiating. A lunch will be served after the funeral mass at 1:00 p.m. in the church social hall. A graveside service will be at St. Mary Durand Cemetery at 3:30 pm.
